Which one leases better, the XC60 or the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid?
On a pure payment basis the gas XC60 B5 Plus AWD is lower, at $519 per month against $549 for the Plug-in Hybrid T8 Plus AWD, both for 36 months. But the plug-in hybrid is the stronger lease in terms of value delivered: you are getting a vehicle with $11,300 more in MSRP for $30 more a month and $980 more at signing. Measured as a share of sticker price, the plug-in hybrid is by a wide margin the better-supported lease this month.
Why does the plug-in hybrid lease for only $30 more when it costs $11,300 more?
Two reasons. First, the T8 holds a much higher residual value, $38,187 at lease end compared with $31,189 for the B5, and a lease only charges you for the depreciation between the selling price and that residual. Second, Volvo is applying $5,500 in Lease Allowances to the T8 Plus AWD versus $3,250 on the B5 Plus AWD. Together those close almost the entire gap.
How much more will the plug-in hybrid cost me over the whole lease?
On the advertised payments, $30 more per month across 36 months is $1,080, and there is $980 more due at signing, so roughly $2,060 more. That is not the whole picture, though. Both advertised payments exclude taxes, title, registration, license, insurance, and dealer fees, and several of those scale with the value of the vehicle. Insurance in particular usually runs higher on the T8. New Hampshire does not levy a sales or use tax, but if you register in Massachusetts you will owe Massachusetts tax on the lease, and that will be a larger number on the higher payment. Working the other way, Volvo estimates the average driver uses up to 315 fewer gallons of gas a year in the T8 than in the B5. How far can the XC60 Plug-in Hybrid go on electricity alone?
Up to 35 miles on a full charge, per EPA estimates. For a lot of our Nashua and Merrimack customers that covers the commute, the school run, and errands without the gas engine coming on. With a full tank and a full battery the combined range is up to 560 miles, so longer trips up I-93 or out to the Lakes Region need no planning at all.
Do I need to install a charger at home?
No, but a home wallbox makes it easier. On a wallbox or a standard AC public charger the battery goes from empty to full in about five hours, which is an overnight charge. You can also find public AC charging through the Volvo Cars app or Google Maps built into the vehicle. Our team can walk you through home charging options when you visit.
What is the difference between a mild hybrid and a plug-in hybrid?
The XC60 B5 is a mild hybrid: a 48V battery assists the gas engine during acceleration and cruising and recaptures energy under braking, but it never drives the car on its own and it never plugs in. The XC60 Plug-in Hybrid has a much larger battery you charge from an outlet, and it can drive on pure electric power. Both improve on a conventional gas engine, but only the plug-in gives you electric-only miles.
What are the mileage limits on these leases?
Both advertised offers are based on 7,500 miles per year, with excess mileage at $0.25 per mile and a $450 disposition fee at lease end.
